Downloads and Login Revamp

You've probably noticed that we've been rolling out some new (and somewhat annoying) changes over the last couple of days. I'd like to let you know that we've finally ironed out what we think are the last issues :)

That being said, I'd like to present to you the new authentication system, and the new download pages.

The authentication system was revamped over the last few weeks in order to allow us to share accounts over several "network" websites. We have an upcoming WoW database site for example, which will allow you to login using your Curse.com account and password.

We have also revamped a few of the pieces of the download section:

  • You will see brand new details and version download pages with a much enhanced look bringing them closer in line with the rest of the new design.
  • We have improved the "lightbox"-esque effects when viewing screenshots and similar tasks.
  • There is now code to share a file tooltip (via JavaScript) on an external website by clicking the "share" button on a files detail page.
  • We have enhanced the tooltip mechanism to be much more robust and have removed the on-demand (ajax) tooltips.
  • The RSS feeds have been cleaned up and you can now view access them for only a specific site (such as World of Warcraft)
  • All of the pages which list the top 100 X have been cleaned up. Examples are the New Downloads, Top Rated Downloads, etc.
  • We have added a new "Recommended Downloads" feature. This will show you what other users also liked based on their usage of files.
  • We have added the "Other X" box which will show you other popular files within the category of the file.
  • There is now a button to "install via curse client" right on the files detail page.
  • The list of downloads is now powered by our javascript library and will make it so there is much less scrolling, but still easy to see all versions of a file.

Ouch. I have to say every "revamp" brings more problems than good. The layout of the site gets harder to navigate, the colors are mediocre, and now login takes 2-5 minutes. Not good. More importantly... I'd like to know what is being "authenticated" that needs to take that long?

What exactly got harder to navigate?

I have the Problem, that I don't find older downloads at the addonpages.
I just see the button for downloading the last version. Were can I find the older versions?
(At the bottom there is a space called Downloads with a number, but there aren't any links or else in it)

Edit: Well... I don't know why but now I can see them... strange fix out of the blue oO

I had a problem with the new login system just now. I had received an email from Curse notifying me that a favorite addon had changed. I clicked the link for the addon and it loaded up an authentication page which kept reloading and reloading and reloading very fast. Clicking the "Skip authentication process" link would do nothing except restart the loop if I had stopped it using Escape.

If anything, it's a bit easier now. My biggest concern with Curse has been with each new revamp things totally change, making it hard to get used to where things are. The latest changes have kept the general design and placement very well with a few much-liked improvements.

The authentication is a bit slow, however I've not yet had to wait for more than a few seconds longer than before. I've got a problem staying logged in and am pretty sure it's not on my end, but nothing too big.

Keep up the good work. I can't wait to see the database site!

What happened to the OpenID login? Will it be coming back or is it gone for good?

I was wondering about the OpenID Login as well ... had to go through the annoying process of reset my password. How inconvenient :: grin ::

I noticed the login issues over the past few days, it was a little annoying...

I followed a link from my Curse Client telling me an addon had been updated then was surprised to see the new page layout. It will take me a couple days to get used to but it looks clean and organized.

I'll have to check out the revamped RSS feeds as well, as much as I like hearing about all games, I could care less about some of them...

::Note: I just tried the new RSS feed and I'm stil getting the same feed for all news, even thought it was supposed to be just WoW news.

I would like, as a project admin, to have the option to disable the one-click install (or alternatively customize where it should put the files).
The reason is: when people download my UI compilation through the client, the contents of the zip will automatically extract into the ..\Interface\AddOns directory, thus not installing any of the addons, nor the settings, and thereby make the whole thing unusable.

The game specific RSS feeds are only working with files right now.

While I agree that in the case of compilations the client isn't working perfectly right now, there is an option in the client to run .exe files when downloaded with it, which would then install the compilation properly.

As of right now support for OpenID has been suspended. As you have noticed you can still use your account by simply performing a "Lost Password" on it. We will be reevaluating OpenID in the future, but it just didn't have enough support for the time it would have taken to implement network-wide.

The Download section of individual addons show the number of available downloads in the header, but there is no "body" section, so therefore you can not choose a particular download...only the one at the top of the page.

This is a bug, if you refresh it should display properly.

One of the reasons it didn't get used much might have been because you couldn't setup a preexisting account to work with OpenID without getting an admin to do it for you.

I have the same exact problem as you Doxxx

First, I love the site, and thank you for it. However, my curse client no longer works, and I have changed nothing. At first it was not recognizing my user name and/or password, and now it wont even work from the addon downloads page (I have to select the "mirror" option and DL/extract the old way...). I am running 32 bit Vista (Home).

I reset my password, and btw, it sent me two emails with different passwords. Now I am able to log on to curse, but I still can't use the client for DL's. Any help?

    Thanks again for the site.
